


Rob Roy Macgregor was a regular visitor to the town and Bonnie Prince Charlie himself held his final council of war here before that fateful encounter at Culloden. Once the centre of the Pictish Kingdom of Fortren and the locus of the oldest Roman frontier in Europe, the town hosted the annual Michaelmas cattle Tryst in the eighteenth century. Located on the southern slopes of the rugged Grampians, its leafy lanes and tranquil riverside walkways conceal much of its turbulent past.
